Who can apply for SSI?

Supplemental Security Income (SSI) is a federal program that provides financial assistance to individuals who have limited income and resources, and who are disabled, blind, or aged (65 or older). Unlike Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI), SSI does not require a work history. To determine if you qualify for SSI, it's important to understand the specific criteria the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Eligibility Requirements for SSI

Age or Disability Status

To be eligible for SSI, you must meet one of the following conditions:

  • Aged: You must be 65 years or older.
  • Disabled: You must have a medically determinable physical or mental impairment that prevents you from working or performing substantial gainful activity (SGA). This disability must be expected to last for at least 12 months or result in death.
  • Blindness: If you are legally blind, you can also qualify for SSI.

Limited Income and Resources

SSI is designed for individuals with limited financial resources. The SSA considers both income and resources when determining your eligibility. Here are the key components:

  • Income: The SSA counts almost all sources of income, including wages, pensions, and even some government benefits. To qualify, your monthly income must fall below a specific threshold. The amount varies depending on whether you are living alone or with others.
  • Resources: Resources include things like bank accounts, real estate, and vehicles. The SSA has strict limits on how much you can own. For example, individuals applying for SSI generally cannot have more than $2,000 in resources, while couples cannot have more than $3,000.

U.S. Citizenship or Legal Residency

To qualify for SSI, you must be a U.S. citizen or a qualifying noncitizen. Qualifying noncitizens may include lawful permanent residents (green card holders), individuals with refugee status, or others who meet specific immigration criteria.

Residency

You must be residing in one of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, or the Northern Mariana Islands. SSI is not available to individuals who are residing outside the United States or in certain U.S. territories.

Disability or Blindness Determination

Your condition must be severe enough to meet the SSA’s definition of disability or blindness. The SSA uses a strict medical and vocational review process to assess whether your disability prevents you from engaging in substantial gainful activity.

How to Apply for SSI

To apply for SSI, you can do so online, by phone, or by visiting your local SSA office. Here’s a brief overview of the process:

  • Apply Online: The fastest and most convenient way to apply is through the SSA’s online portal at www.ssa.gov. You will be guided through the process and can submit your application electronically.
  • Schedule an Appointment: If you prefer to apply in person, contact your local SSA office to schedule an appointment.
  • Phone Application: You can also apply over the phone by calling the SSA at 1-800-772-1213.

Make sure you have the necessary documentation ready, including proof of identity, medical records, and financial information.
