If you’re unable to work due to a disability, you may be eligible for Social Security Disability benefits. Applying for disability benefits can seem like a complicated process, but knowing who to contact and how to begin the application process is crucial. Here’s everything you need to know about who to call and what steps to take when applying for disability.

Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.

Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.

Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI)

If you are looking to apply for disability benefits through the Social Security Administration (SSA), you’ll be applying for either Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), depending on your work history or financial need. The process involves contacting the SSA, which is the government agency responsible for administering both programs.

Who to Call: Social Security Administration (SSA)

  • Call the SSA: To begin your disability application, call the SSA at 1-800-772-1213. This is the SSA's national toll-free number where you can speak to a representative, ask questions, and start your application over the phone.
  • TTY for the Hearing Impaired: 1-800-325-0778
  • You can reach the SSA Monday through Friday, from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM (local time).
  • Apply Online: You can also apply online through the SSA’s official website at www.ssa.gov. The online application is available for both SSDI and SSI claims and is often the fastest way to apply.
  • Visit Your Local SSA Office: If you prefer to apply in person or need additional assistance, you can visit your local Social Security office. You can find the nearest office using the SSA’s online locator tool on their website or by calling the national toll-free number. It’s always a good idea to schedule an appointment to avoid long wait times.

Additional Disability Programs

If you’re applying for disability benefits that are related to a work injury or illness, you may need to contact your employer or their insurance company for Workers' Compensation benefits. For short-term disability benefits, your employer’s human resources department or your insurance provider should be contacted.

Disability Benefits Through the VA (Veterans Affairs)

If your disability is related to military service, you may be eligible for benefits through the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). To apply for VA disability benefits, you can call the VA at 1-800-827-1000 or apply online through the VA’s eBenefits portal.

How the Application Process Works

  • Gather Your Medical and Personal Information: Before you call or apply online, make sure you have all the necessary documentation, including:
  • Your Social Security number
  • Birth certificate or proof of age
  • Medical records and documentation of your disability
  • Work history (for SSDI)
  • Financial information (for SSI)
  • Begin Your Application: Whether you apply by phone, online, or in person, you’ll be required to fill out an application form that asks about your medical condition, work history, and how your disability affects your ability to work.
  • Provide Medical Evidence: One of the most important aspects of your disability claim is providing solid medical evidence. This includes:
  • Detailed medical records from your doctors
  • Treatment history
  • Diagnoses
  • Any tests or examinations that confirm your disability
  • Wait for a Decision: After you’ve submitted your application, the SSA or other relevant agency will review your case. This process can take several months. If your application is approved, you will start receiving benefits. If it’s denied, you have the right to appeal the decision.
