- If you are young (under 31), the Social Security Administration (SSA) may reduce the number of work credits you need to qualify. You could qualify with just a few years of work history.
- If you are disabled before you turn 22, you may qualify for SSDI through a parent's work record, especially if your parent is receiving Social Security benefits.
Supplemental Security Income (SSI) as an Alternative
If you don’t qualify for SSDI due to a lack of work history, you may still be eligible for Supplemental Security Income (SSI). Unlike SSDI, SSI is a needs-based program that does not require a work history. Instead, the focus is on your financial situation and whether you have limited income and resources.
